Access Ally

In Development

Over the summer, I had the pleasure of taking a sociology course(Disability and Society) with Dr. Laura Harrison. Disability and Society focuses on the entire history of the disability movement and the ongoing difficulties people with disabilities struggle within society. Needless to say, I was shocked at how long it took society to make accessibility regulations. The methods the medical and charity model deploys to take advantage of disabled people and the lack of care around ableist diction we use in day-to-day life furthered my disappointment. By the end of the quarter, I had a longing to help the disability movement, in one way or another.

After heavy reflection, I sought to develop an app to help educate able-bodied individuals about the ongoing injustices occurring against disabled people today. From taking Dr.Harrison’s course, I recognized that the ignorance shown by society was often due to a lack of education - Access Ally looks to solve that issue.

Access Ally will serve as an all-in-one resource app to get information about the disability movement. Currently being built using Swift UI, it will

  1. give users access to comparing different models of disability,

  2. an ableist dictionary to check their language, and

  3. a settings tab full of accessibility options that would allow all users complete access to app features
