Through The Fog

Tools Lead, Gameplay Programming, level Design, Ui Design

Through the Fog is a 3D, exploration, Rogue Lite, mapping game and serves as my senior capstone project. Players take control of ‘The Mapper’ and his mysterious tablet Kobi. Together they must explore an abandoned cyberpunk city, mapping its intricate buildings and landmarks to later sell in their home village to purchase upgrades, expanding their mapping hustle.

Through the Fog was published on Steam in June 2024.

On Through the Fog, I primarily flexed between UI/UX Lead, Tools Lead, and Gameplay Programming. Serving as UI design lead, I made countless mocks in Figma which iteratively evolved into UI and HUDs implementations seen throughout. To simulate real-world publisher behaviors, midway through development, our advisors forced a pivot: our UI had to be entirely diegetic(see Figure 1). With our pivot requiring all UI elements to be dietetic, I iteratively reimagined all our layouts to be game-world-ready.

At the start of the project, I also led rapid prototype ideation and conducted play tests on the mapping system to gain further feedback on how we should evolve our core mapping gameplay loop before subsequently handing the system off to our systems lead.

As Tools lead, I helped with GitHub version control monitoring as well as organizing bug reports using a custom Discord bot I implemented and Trello.

Within gameplay programming, I helped program all the mini-games that served as micro-interactions as well as UI animations throughout our project. I also helped debug various core gameplay sequences.
